The short answer

Best for most people

Havells Aqua Plus 1.2 L kettle (GHBKTATK125)

A double-wall steel kettle with a 2-year warranty on its listing, for a household that mostly boils water for tea and coffee a few cups at a time.

  • 2-year warranty on the listing
  • 304 steel interior, no plastic inside
  • Double-wall body, boil-dry protection

The 2 alternatives, for other needs

  1. If you boil for a bigger householdAGARO Elegant 1.8 L kettle (33897)

A 1.8-litre kettle with a steel inside and a cool-touch outer body, for homes where one boil has to cover several cups.

  2. If you also want to cook in itBorosil Quick 1.3 L multipurpose kettle (BKE06)

A 600W cooking kettle with a temperature knob and a set of steaming trays, for a hostel room, office pantry or small kitchen where it has to do more than boil water.

Most of the 26 listings we shortlisted say the kettle switches itself off, and most say it boils fast. The differences that matter sit lower down the listing: what the water touches inside, whether the outside gets hot, whether the kettle protects itself if it's switched on empty, and how long the warranty runs.

We read 30 Amazon.in listings and shortlisted 26: ordinary jug kettles, multipurpose kettles with steaming trays, two glass kettles and a 300 ml travel kettle. Two more ordinary kettles, a Westinghouse 1.7-litre model and the Lifelong LLEK23, were cut for having too little buyer history, so they aren't compared here. For six kettles, from Havells, AGARO, Borosil, Milton and Prestige, we also checked the listing against the brand's own product page. Nobody here has used these kettles; this is a reading of what the listings and brand pages state, and we say where they run out.

Our pick is the Havells Aqua Plus (GHBKTATK125), a 1.2-litre kettle with a 304 stainless steel inside, a double-wall body that stays cool to the touch, boil-dry protection and a 2-year warranty on its listing. If you boil for more people, the AGARO Elegant (33897) holds 1.8 litres, with a stainless steel inside (no grade stated), a cool-touch outer body and boil-dry protection, on a 1-year warranty. If you want to steam and cook as well as boil, Borosil's Quick kettle (BKE06) has a temperature knob, and its listing and Borosil's page list a set of steaming trays.

Why it's on the list

  • 2-year warranty on the listing
  • 304 steel interior, no plastic inside
  • Double-wall body, boil-dry protection

Worth knowing

  • At 1.2 litres it holds less than the 1.5-litre Milton Rapid and Butterfly Evo Pro, or the 1.8-litre AGARO Elegant below. For a big family's morning tea you may be boiling twice.
  • The 2-year term comes from the listing alone. The Havells page we read doesn't state a warranty term, and neither the listing nor that page says what the warranty excludes or whether you need to register the kettle. Keep your invoice.
  • The Havells page we read gives no usage or safety instructions. The listing's care field says to switch the kettle off when it isn't in use, and the box is listed with an instruction manual, so read that before first use.

Skip it if you regularly boil more than 1.2 litres at a time, or want to cook noodles and eggs in your kettle.

The reasoning

On paper the Aqua Plus covers each of the things we looked for. The listing says the interior is 304 stainless steel with no plastic, and Havells' own page describes a double-wall stainless steel tank so the outside stays cool to the touch. The listing names both auto shut-off and boil-dry protection. It draws 1250W, and Havells' page and the listing agree on that figure and on the 1.2-litre capacity.

What settled it was the warranty. The listing's title says 2 years of doorstep warranty from Havells, and its warranty field says 2 years comprehensive. The other shortlisted kettles that list both a cool-touch body and a 304 stainless steel inside are Milton's two Rapid 1.5-litre listings and Borosil's Quick, and none of them states more than 1 year on its listing. The wipro Elato also gives 2 years, but its listing never says what the inside of the kettle is made of. INALSA, IBELL and Longway list 2 years too, though IBELL and Longway need registration for the second year, and none of those three lists a cool-touch body or a 304 inside.

The closest rival is the black Milton Rapid Cool Touch 1.5 L (Rapid_Black-1.5L). It holds more water (1.5 litres against 1.2) and draws a little more power (1350W against 1250W), and both its listing and Milton's page give a cool-touch body, an SS 304 inner body, auto shut-off and protection against dry heating. Its listing gives a 1-year warranty, and Milton's page says 1-year standard warranty against manufacturing defects. If you'd rather have the extra 300 ml than the second year of cover, it's a sound choice.

If you boil for a bigger household

AGARO Elegant 1.8 L kettle (33897)

AGARO · Pick 2 of 3

Worth knowing

  • The warranty is 1 year, half the Havells' and the wipro Elato's 2. Neither the listing nor AGARO's page says what the warranty covers or excludes; the term appears in the listing's feature list, as the listing has no separate warranty field.
  • Neither source gives a steel grade for the inside. Havells, Borosil and Milton's Rapid Cool Touch name 304; AGARO says only stainless steel, and the listing's material field reads "Plastic, Stainless Steel".
  • The AGARO page we read gives no usage or safety instructions, and the listing doesn't say a manual is in the box. Its box-contents field lists only the power base with cord.

Skip it if you only make a couple of cups at a time, or want a warranty longer than a year.

The reasoning

The Elegant holds 1.8 litres and draws 1500W. AGARO's own page and the listing say the same things almost line for line: stainless steel inside with a cool-touch outer body, a thermostat with boil-dry protection and auto shut-off, a concealed heating element, a lid that locks with one touch and a 360-degree base with a 1.2-metre cord. The listing's title calls the inner body double-layered stainless steel.

Several other kettles on the shortlist hold 1.8 litres or more, and we looked hard at three. The wipro Elato BK 213 lists a 2-year warranty from Wipro, a cool-touch exterior and protection against overheating, dry boiling and excess steam, a year more cover than the AGARO. But its listing gives ABS as the material and doesn't say what the inside of the kettle is made of, which is the part that touches your water. Milton's Rapid 1.8 L (Rapid-EK18) matches the AGARO on capacity and power and lists dry-boil protection, but it lists a cool-touch handle rather than a cool-touch body. The Longway Kestro holds 2 litres, but its listing doesn't mention a cool-touch body or boil-dry protection.

We chose the AGARO because its listing and AGARO's page agree on every point we compared, and it states both a steel inside and a cool-touch outside.

If you also want to cook in it

Borosil Quick 1.3 L multipurpose kettle (BKE06)

Borosil · Pick 3 of 3

Worth knowing

  • It draws 600W against the Havells' 1250W and the AGARO's 1500W, and neither the listing nor Borosil's page gives a boiling time. If you mostly want hot water, the jug kettles above have heating elements of more than twice the wattage.
  • Borosil's page says to unplug the kettle and let it cool completely before cleaning, never to put the kettle, cord or power base in water or let them get wet, and not to use abrasive cleaners. Its care notes also say to wash the attachments separately.
  • The weight differs by source: the listing gives 1 kg 300 g, and Borosil's page gives a net weight of 1.60 kg.
  • The box contents differ within the listing: its components field and Borosil's page list a steamer, poach tray, small idli stand, grill rack and egg tray, but a listing bullet lists the package as the kettle, an egg tray and a user manual. Check with the seller before buying for the trays.

Skip it if you only ever boil water; the jug kettles above draw more than twice the power.

The reasoning

This is a different kind of kettle from the Havells and the AGARO. It draws 600W and has a wide mouth and a see-through glass lid, so you can boil water, make noodles or soup, and steam on trays. Borosil's Quick has a temperature control knob, so you can turn it down to simmer rather than run it at a full boil. Borosil's page lists a steamer, a poach tray, a small idli stand, a steel grill rack and an egg tray that holds up to 7 eggs.

The listing gives a food-grade SS 304 inner body with a cool-touch outer body, and lists auto cut-off and overheat protection. Borosil's page adds boil-dry protection and a stay-cool handle. The warranty is spelled out in more detail than for the Havells or the AGARO: Borosil's page gives 1 year against manufacturing defects with on-site service, where an engineer visits to inspect and repair it, and says accidents, mishandling, misuse and not following the usage instructions aren't covered. The listing adds that spare parts aren't covered.

Among the other multipurpose kettles, AGARO's Regency (33874) also lists an SS304 inner pot, a steamer and variable temperature control, but its listing states no warranty term at all. SOLARA's 1.5-litre kettle lists boil-dry protection, 3 boiling modes and a 1-year warranty, but its listing says only stainless steel, with no grade and no mention of a cool-touch body. Milton's Go Electro cooker gives 1 year against manufacturing defects and a temperature knob, but it mentions a cool-touch handle, not a cool-touch body.

What we ruled out

  • Milton Rapid Cool Touch Electric Kettle 1.5 L (Rapid_Black-1.5L)The closest call. Its listing and Milton's page both give 1.5 litres, 1350W, a cool-touch body, an SS 304 inner body and protection against dry heating. It lost to the Havells on warranty: the listing's title says 1 year, and Milton's page says 1-year standard warranty against manufacturing defects, even though the same page carries a "GET MILTON 2 YEAR WARRANTY" banner that it doesn't explain. The cream and grey version (Rapid_CB-1.5L) lists the same build but states no warranty term on its listing.
  • wipro Elato BK 213 Cool Touch Electric Kettle 1.8 LIt states a 2-year warranty from Wipro, a cool-touch exterior and protection against overheating, dry boiling and excess steam. But its material field reads ABS and the listing doesn't say what the inside is made of. It draws 1200W, the least of the 1.8-litre kettles on the shortlist. Wipro's site didn't load when we checked, so we couldn't compare the listing with it.
  • Milton Rapid Electric Kettle 1.8 L (Rapid-EK18)It holds 1.8 litres, draws 1500W and lists dry-boil protection, but it gives a cool-touch handle rather than a cool-touch body. Its warranty depends on where you read it: the listing says 1 year, and Milton's own page says 2 years in its title and description but "1-year standard warranty against manufacturing defects" under Warranty And Care. Milton's page also describes a Teflon-coated heating plate, so not every inner surface is described as steel.
  • Prestige PKOSS 1.5 L stainless steel kettlePrestige's page and the listing agree on 1.5 litres (the page also carries a 1.8 L spec block), 1350W in their descriptions (the page's own title says 1500W), ISI certification and an auto cut-off that works both when the water boils and when the kettle runs dry, with a 1-year warranty. Both describe a cool-touch handle and lid, and neither says the body itself stays cool.
  • INALSA Prism Inox glass kettle 1.8 LA borosilicate glass kettle with a 2-year warranty from INALSA, blue LED lighting and boil-dry protection. Its listing, which has a single bullet, doesn't mention a cool-touch body, which each of the three picks lists. We didn't check it against INALSA's own page.
  • Pigeon Crystal Glass Electric Kettle 1.8 L (14323)Its own listing can't settle the power draw: the title says 1500 Watt and the wattage field says 1800 Watts. It also gives Plastic as the material for a glass kettle, and the parts of the listing we could read don't mention boil-dry protection.

Before you buy

  1. Check what touches the water

The Havells and Borosil listings, among others, name 304-grade stainless steel inside, and Havells' listing adds that there's no plastic in the interior. Milton's page for the Rapid 1.8 L mentions a Teflon-coated heating plate, and the wipro Elato's listing doesn't say what the inside is made of. If this matters to you, choose a kettle whose listing says it outright.

  2. A cool-touch handle isn't a cool-touch body

Prestige's PKOSS lists a cool-touch handle and lid, and Milton's Rapid 1.8 L a cool-touch handle. The Havells, the AGARO Elegant and the Borosil each list a cool-touch outer body. With children around the kitchen, the second kind is the one to look for.

  3. Read the warranty line, not just the title

IBELL's warranty field says 2 years, but its feature list explains that the second year needs product registration. Longway's 2 years also need registration within 15 days of delivery and the original invoice at service. The Cookwell, AGARO Regency, Lifelong LLEKP03 and Milton Rapid cream and grey listings state no warranty term at all.

  4. Wattage can disagree within a listing

The Prestige 41862 is titled 1500 watts but its first bullet says 1350, Pigeon's Amaze Plus is titled 1300 Watt but a bullet says 1500W, and Pigeon's Crystal Glass says 1500 Watt in the title and 1800 Watts in the details. When the figures conflict, ask the seller before relying on either.
