The short answer

Best for most people

Aristocrat Liberty Large (LIBERS78NSB)

A polypropylene hard case whose size, capacity and 4.0 kg weight its maker's own page confirms, for anyone who wants a large bag on figures they can check.

  • 106 litres at 4.0 kg on VIP's page
  • 8 spinner wheels, polypropylene shell
  • 3-year warranty stated

A polyester soft case with an expander and the biggest capacity figure on the shortlist, for people who come home with more than they left with.

A large check-in bag has to hold a long trip's packing and still weigh little enough empty that it doesn't eat your baggage allowance. The listings make that hard to judge, because capacity, weight and even the shell material sometimes change between a bag's title, its spec table and the brand's own page.

We read 30 Amazon.in listings and shortlisted 28, several of them the same bag in different colours. We compared them on capacity, empty weight, dimensions, shell, wheels, lock and warranty, and for five of the bags, from Aristocrat, Skybags and Mokobara, we also read the brand's own product page. American Tourister, Kamiliant and Safari don't list any of their shortlisted models in their own online stores, so for those we had the listings and each brand's warranty terms. Nobody here has packed or wheeled these bags, so this is a reading of specifications.

Our pick is the Aristocrat Liberty Large (LIBERS78NSB), a polypropylene hard case on 8 wheels that VIP Industries' own page puts at 106 litres and 4.0 kg. The Kamiliant Savvy's listing gives nearly the same figures, and we explain below why we still chose the Liberty. If you want a polycarbonate shell and a TSA-approved lock, look at the Mokobara Transit Check-in Large, though it is the heaviest bag on the shortlist. If you'd rather have a soft bag that expands, the Aristocrat Commander Large lists the most room.

Why it's on the list

  • 106 litres at 4.0 kg on VIP's page
  • 8 spinner wheels, polypropylene shell
  • 3-year warranty stated

Worth knowing

  • The listing's weight field reads "4 g". VIP's page gives 4.0 kg, and that is the figure we use.
  • VIP's warranty policy excludes damage caused by airlines and airports and says to report it to the carrier immediately, so raise belt damage with the airline as soon as you spot it.
  • Neither the listing nor VIP's page mentions a TSA lock. It has a combination lock.

Skip it if you want a TSA-approved lock or a polycarbonate shell.

The reasoning

The Liberty is a polypropylene hard case on 8 spinner wheels, with a flush combination lock and a multi-stage handle. VIP Industries' own page for the Liberty Large lists 53 x 33 x 78 cm, 4.0 kg and 106 litres, and the Amazon.in listing gives the same dimensions and capacity. The listing's weight field reads "4 g", which can't be right; VIP's page settles it at 4.0 kg.

What decided it is that pairing of capacity and weight on numbers we could check. Only two bags on the shortlist have a listing and a brand page that agree on size and capacity: this one and the Mokobara Transit, which gives 100 litres at 5.1 kg. Two listings match or edge the Liberty on paper with no brand page behind them. The Aristocrat Altitude gives the same 106 litres, 53 x 33 x 78 cm and 4 kg, and the Kamiliant Savvy gives 108 litres at 3 kg 970 g, but neither appears in its brand's online store.

Four listings give a lower empty weight than the Liberty's 4.0 kg: American Tourister's Liftoff+ (3 kg 500 g) and Upland Sport (3 kg 900 g), and Kamiliant's Harrier Zing (3 kg 730 g) and Savvy. The Upland Sport lists 104 litres and the Harrier Zing 87584 cubic centimetres, both less room, and the Liftoff+ listing gives no capacity at all. At the other end, Safari's Genius Alley, Genius Theo, Crescent, Roma, Thorium Royale and the Dusk Green Pentagon Pro list more room, about 108 to 120 litres, but each listing gives 4 kg 500 g. The Rose Gold Pentagon Pro listing claims 120 litres at 4 kg 100 g, yet it calls the bag large and small in its title and medium in a bullet, gives 3 years of warranty in a bullet and 5 in its warranty field, and the Dusk Green listing of the same bag says 113 litres and 4 kg 500 g. Safari's own store doesn't list the Pentagon Pro, so nothing settles which is right.

The listing gives a 3-year international warranty, and VIP's page says the 3 years cover the frame, wheels, zippers and shell integrity. VIP's warranty policy covers manufacturing defects only, leaves it to VIP to repair the bag, replace a part or replace the bag, and excludes scratches, dents, accidental damage and damage caused by airlines. That policy is written for purchases from vipbags.com and VIP's authorised channels, and it doesn't say whether an Amazon.in seller counts, so keep your invoice.

Worth knowing

  • Mokobara's free airline damage cover (Ctrl+Z) does not apply to Amazon purchases, its policy page says. Its warranty claim form does list Amazon as a place of purchase, and we couldn't tell from Mokobara's pages whether its 30-day trial applies to an Amazon.in order, so ask support@mokobara.com before counting on it.
  • The airline damage cover panel on Mokobara's product page lists theft or loss, overpacking, wear and tear, scratches and scuffs, heat, fire and chemicals, and commercial use as not covered.
  • The listing gives the country of origin as China; Mokobara's page says PRC & Thailand.

Skip it if empty weight matters more to you than the lock and the shell, since every other listing on the shortlist gives a lower weight.

The reasoning

Mokobara's own page and the Amazon.in listing agree on the numbers: 74 x 51 x 30 cm, 5.1 kg and 100 litres. The shell is German Makrolon polycarbonate, the 8 wheels are Hinomoto, the zips are YKK, and the lock is a one-push TSA-approved lock.

Neither the shell nor the lock is unique to it. Safari's Roma, Genius Theo, Astra Neo, Thorium Neo, Crescent and Thorium Royale and American Tourister's Barcelona are polycarbonate too, going by their listings, and the Thorium Royale listing also names a TSA-approved lock, with 120 litres at 4 kg 500 g. That listing beats the Mokobara on room and weight. We kept the Mokobara because its maker's page confirms its figures and its warranty claim form lists Amazon as a place of purchase and asks for the invoice, while Safari's store doesn't list the Thorium Royale and Safari's warranty policy wants a warranty card stamped by an authorised Safari dealer along with the invoice.

Inside the airline damage cover panel on Mokobara's product page, a list headed "Also covered under warranty" names shell cracks and dents, wobbly wheels, stiff handles, zips and handles. That panel is part of Ctrl+Z, which Mokobara's policy says does not apply to Amazon purchases. Mokobara's warranty FAQ gives the Transit range 3 years and says its warranty covers repair or replacement of any defective material or component, not regular wear and tear.

You pay for all this in weight. At 5.1 kg empty it is the heaviest bag on the shortlist, more than a kilo above the Liberty's 4.0 kg, and it holds less, 100 litres to the Liberty's 106.

If you'd rather have a soft bag that expands

Polyester soft case, 4 wheelsAmazon.in listing
Warranty
3 years: fabric, zippers, wheels, handlesAristocrat Commander Large page (VIP Industries)

Worth knowing

  • The listing marks it "Not Water Resistant", though a bullet says the polyester resists light moisture.
  • VIP's page for the large size shows "Luggage size Cabin" in its spec table and lists no dimensions, weight or capacity, so every size figure here is from the Amazon.in listing.
  • As with the Liberty, VIP's warranty policy excludes damage caused by airlines and is written for purchases from VIP, its authorised channels or vipbags.com; keep the invoice.

Skip it if you want a hard shell, or a bag the listing calls water resistant.

The reasoning

The Commander's listing gives 137 litres, the largest capacity any shortlisted listing states, at 4 kg 100 g and 48 x 36 x 79 cm. The listing and VIP's page both say the built-in expander opens up to 30% more space, and the listing describes two packing compartments with built-in straps and a 3-digit combination lock. It rolls on 4 spinner wheels rather than 8.

Neither the listing nor VIP's page says whether the 137 litres is with the expander open, and VIP's page gives no dimensions, weight or capacity for this size at all; its spec table even reads "Luggage size Cabin". The page's two variants, STCOM79EBLK and STCOM79EFGN, include this listing's model number, so it is the right bag; take the size figures from the listing. VIP's page says the 3-year warranty covers the fabric, zippers, wheels and handles, and the same VIP policy and exclusions as the Liberty apply.

Skybags' Rubik is the other expandable soft case here, and its listing and VIP's product page give a 5-year warranty to the Commander's 3, though VIP's warranty policy lists 3 years for hard and soft luggage. We passed on it because its numbers don't hold together: the listing gives 86 litres in one field and 100 in another at 47 x 37 x 78 cm, while VIP's Rubik Large page says 133 litres and 79 x 48 x 33 cm. The listing's model field reads only "Rubik", and VIP's page gives a different code for each colour of the large size, so the listing doesn't tie itself to one of them.

  • Cut 2 listings with too little buyer history on Amazon.in to include.
  • Those two were a Skybags Swirl and the black colour of the American Tourister Upland Sport. The Upland Sport is still compared here through its blue listing.
  • Compared the 28 on capacity, empty weight, dimensions, shell material, wheels, lock and warranty, and on whether each listing agrees with itself.
  • Checked the Aristocrat Liberty and Commander, the Skybags Trooper and Rubik, and the Mokobara Transit against the brands' own product pages on vipbags.com and mokobara.com. The online stores of Safari, American Tourister and Kamiliant don't list any of their models on the shortlist, and VIP's doesn't list the Aristocrat Altitude or Airpro Max, so for those we had the listings and the brands' warranty pages.

What we ruled out

  • Kamiliant by American Tourister Savvy 80 cm (SP7 (0) 66 003)On its listing it edges the Liberty: 108 litres at 3 kg 970 g against 106 litres at 4.0 kg, also with 8 wheels, a polypropylene shell, a combination lock and a 3-year international warranty. Its warranty text is also less tied to the seller. The Samsonite warranty text on Kamiliant's site asks for the warranty certificate or the original receipt and doesn't tie cover to a seller, though repairs go through an approved Samsonite service centre and you pay to get the bag there, while VIP's policy covers bags bought from VIP or its authorised channels. We kept the Liberty because VIP's page confirms its figures, and Kamiliant's India store doesn't list the Savvy. If the warranty route matters more to you than a maker-confirmed spec, this is the one to buy. It is also a little taller, 80.5 cm against 78 cm.
  • Aristocrat Altitude Large (ALTITS78NSB)On paper it matches the Liberty: 53 x 33 x 78 cm, 106 litres, 4 kg, 8 wheels and a 3-year international warranty. We chose the Liberty only because VIP's own page confirms its figures, and we found no Altitude page in VIP's online catalogue. If the Altitude is the one you can get, its listing gives the same numbers.
  • Safari Thorium Royale 77 cm (THORIUMROYALE774WGNM)On its listing it beats the Mokobara on room and weight: a polycarbonate shell and a TSA-approved lock like the Mokobara's (named in its title and a bullet, though its lock-type field reads "Combination Lock"), with 120 litres at 4 kg 500 g against 100 litres at 5.1 kg, on 8 wheels with a 3-year warranty against manufacturing defects. We kept the Mokobara because Mokobara's page confirms its figures and its claim form lists Amazon. Safari's store doesn't list the Thorium Royale, and Safari's warranty policy wants a warranty card stamped by an authorised Safari dealer along with the invoice. If room and weight matter more to you than that, look at this one.
  • American Tourister Liftoff+ 79 cmAt 3 kg 500 g it gives the lowest weight on the shortlist, leaving aside the Liberty listing's "4 g" error, and it has a mounted TSA-approved lock and a 3-year international warranty. But the listing gives no capacity or dimensions beyond the 79 cm size, and American Tourister's India store doesn't list it, so we had no way to check how much it holds.
  • American Tourister Barcelona 79 cmA polycarbonate bag listed at 110 litres and 4 kg 130 g, roomier and lighter than the Mokobara, with a 3-year global warranty. Its title and a bullet name a mounted combination lock, and only a features field says TSA, so we couldn't count it as a TSA bag. American Tourister's India store doesn't list it.
  • Skybags Trooper Large (TROOP75HPGN)Its listing and VIP's product page both give a 5-year warranty, longer than any of our picks', though VIP's warranty policy lists 3 years for hard and soft luggage. They also agree on the 75 x 55 x 31 cm size and a weight of about 4.3 kg. But they differ on the shell (ABS on the listing, polypropylene top and bottom shells on the page), on the wheels (4 against 8) and on capacity (122 or 92.4 litres on the listing, 92 on the page).

Before you buy

  1. Check your airline's limits yourself

Several Safari listings, the Genius Alley and Pentagon Pro among them, say the bag meets airline travel standards without naming an airline or a limit. Compare the listed dimensions and empty weight with your own airline's allowance. Our three picks weigh 4.0 kg to 5.1 kg before you pack anything.

  2. Match the model number, not the colour

Many bags here appear in several colour listings, and the details don't always match: the Pentagon Pro lists 120 litres in Rose Gold and 113 in Dusk Green. Order by the model number on the listing, such as LIBERS78NSB for the Saddle Brown Liberty; VIP's other colours end in SPB and JBK.

  3. Airline damage is the airline's to answer for

VIP's warranty policy excludes damage caused by airlines and airports, Safari's excludes mishandling in transit, the Samsonite warranty text for American Tourister and Kamiliant excludes transport damage by airlines, and Mokobara's airline damage cover doesn't apply to Amazon purchases. If a bag comes off the belt damaged, Mokobara's page advises getting a damage report (PIR) from the airline desk before you leave the airport, which is sound practice for any brand.

  4. Keep the invoice

VIP may ask for the original invoice before it looks at a claim, Safari wants the invoice and a warranty card stamped by an authorised dealer, Samsonite asks for the warranty certificate or the original receipt, and Mokobara's claim form asks you to attach the invoice. Keep the Amazon.in invoice with the bag's papers.
