A lot of the words in electric toothbrush listings go on what the brush will do for your teeth. The things you can check before buying, how the head moves, how it's powered, what the timer does and what's in the box, take more digging to find.

We read 30 Amazon.in listings, shortlisted 18 (eight from Oral-B, five from AGARO, the rest from Caresmith, Philips, Perfora and Lifelong) and checked all but three of them against their brand's own pages. Nobody here has used these brushes, so this is a reading of specifications, and we say where they run out. Children's brushes are left out on purpose. Four listings were cut for giving no model number, among them Oral-B's Pro 3 and iO3, so those two aren't covered.

Our pick is the Oral-B Vitality Pro (83931903), a rechargeable oscillating-rotating brush with 3 modes, a 2-minute timer and a 2-year warranty. If you'd rather not charge anything, the Oral-B Pro Expert (80371270) runs on an AA battery. The Oral-B iO9 (80791622) adds a pressure sensor, a display and an app, and AGARO's Cosmic Plus (33438) is the sonic option, with 5 brush heads, an interdental head and a travel case listed.

Why it's on the list

  • 3 modes: Daily, Sensitive, Sensitive+
  • Charger and brush head itemised in the box
  • 2-year warranty by Oral-B

Worth knowing

  • Neither the listing nor Oral-B's page gives a battery-life figure or a charging time; Oral-B's page only calls the battery long-lasting. Several rivals do state one: Perfora up to 21 days per charge, AGARO's Cosmic Plus up to 25 and Caresmith's Vibrasonic up to 60.
  • The 2-year term comes from the listing's feature text. Unlike the other Oral-B adult listings here, its details table has no warranty description saying the 2 years run from the date of purchase, so keep your invoice.
  • Oral-B's page has one inconsistency: its overview says "two brushing modes" and then names three. The page's own highlights and the listing both say 3.

Skip it if you want a pressure sensor, or a stated battery life before you buy.

The reasoning

The round head oscillates and rotates, which Oral-B calls its 2D Cleaning Action. Oral-B's India page says a built-in 2-minute timer vibrates every 30 seconds to tell you to move to the next part of your mouth. The listing gives it 3 modes, Daily, Sensitive and Sensitive+, and an IPX7 figure for water.

Its closest rivals were the plain Oral-B Vitality listings, the Perfora PRO and AGARO's Cosmic Lite oscillating brush (34648). The Vitality and Perfora list 2 modes against this one's 3. The AGARO lists 3 modes, a 2-minute timer and an IPX7 figure as well, but the parts of its listing we could read state no warranty term. Of the 18 shortlisted listings, only this one and the iO9 state both a 2-year warranty and more than 2 modes, and that decided it. The iO9 matches or beats it on both; it's below for readers who want its pressure sensor and app.

Against the plain Vitality the box helped too. The black and blue Vitality listings' box field reads only "Electric Toothbrush", while this listing itemises the brush, a charger and a Gentle Clean brush head. Perfora's listing says only "Charger", though Perfora's own page says a USB-C charging cable and one brush head come with it, so on the box those two are level.

Oral-B's page lists what it doesn't have, too: no pressure sensor, no Bluetooth and no display screen. If you want those, the iO9 below has all three. The listing and Oral-B's page both give a 2-year warranty, and both say the handle takes other Oral-B heads, such as CrossAction, Precision Clean and Sensitive Clean.

Oral-B Pro Expert (80371270)

Timer

Warranty

Worth knowing

  • Neither the listing nor Oral-B's page gives a battery-life figure, and the listing doesn't say whether a battery comes in the box. Oral-B's page captions one image "Packaging Front View with batteries", so check the pack when it arrives.
  • The Amazon.in page shows it as "Non-Returnable", while Oral-B's India page offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Ask Oral-B how that guarantee applies to an Amazon.in order before relying on it.

Skip it if you want more than one setting, or a battery-life figure in writing.

The reasoning

There's no charger here. The title says it runs on an AA battery, and Oral-B's India page describes the same oscillating and rotating head as the Vitality Pro. Oral-B's page says its 2-minute timer splits the time into four 30-second intervals. The listing gives one setting, an IPX7 figure and an item weight of 187 g.

Its rival here is Oral-B's other adult AA brush, the Cross Action (82290740). Neither that listing nor Oral-B's page for it mentions a timer at all. The Cross Action does have one thing in writing that the Pro Expert lacks: its title states a 90-day battery. The Pro Expert listing says only "Long Battery Life".

The listing gives a 2-year warranty, valid for 2 years from the original date of purchase, with P&G's contact email, intouch.im@pg.com, and customer support number 1800-202-1364.

Oral-B iO9 (80791622)

Worth knowing

  • The Amazon.in page shows it as "Non-Returnable", so be sure about the extra features before ordering.
  • Neither the listing nor Oral-B's page gives how many days a charge lasts, only the 3-hour charging time.
  • Oral-B's page has two inconsistencies: one overview sentence calls the brush the "iO8", and its mode panel names six modes against the 7 on the listing and elsewhere on the page.

Skip it if you just want a moving head and a timer, without a display or an app.

The reasoning

Of the 18 shortlisted brushes, this is the one whose listing includes a pressure sensor. The listing says it signals when you press too hard or too soft, and when the pressure is right. It also lists 7 modes, from Daily Clean and Sensitive to Tongue Clean, a 2-minute quadrant timer and a 3-hour quick charge. The Oral-B Pro 3, the Oral-B iO3 and a Perfora brush also name a pressure sensor but gave no model number, so we cut them.

Oral-B's India page adds the rest: a magnetic drive, micro-vibrations in the round head, an interactive colour display, Bluetooth, and a phone app that tracks how and where you brush. The page says it comes with a travel case, a charger and a refill holder, though that line follows the sentence that calls it the iO8.

Both the listing and Oral-B's page give a 2-year warranty, and the listing says it runs from the original date of purchase. The listing gives Germany as the country of origin.

If you want a sonic brush

AGARO Cosmic Plus sonic (33438)

Warranty
1 year, manufacturing defects onlyAmazon.in listing

Worth knowing

  • The battery line on both the listing and AGARO's page reads "up to 25" with no unit and assumes two 2-minute brushings a day; "25 Days" appears only in the listing's title. Neither names a charger or cable in the box; they say only USB recharge.
  • AGARO's page and the listing disagree on size: the page gives 200 g and 16.5X4.5X24.5cm, the listing 75 g and 17 x 1.4 x 24 cm. Neither says which figure is the brush alone.
  • The 1-year warranty, by the listing's own wording, covers only manufacturing defects, and queries go to info@uclindia.com or 9821486487, Monday to Saturday. The rose gold listing (33522) shows "Non-Returnable" on Amazon.in; we couldn't see the black one's return line.

Skip it if you want a 2-year warranty, or a charger or cable named in the box.

The reasoning

This one vibrates its brush head rather than turning a round one; the listing's motion field reads "Vibrate" and its bullets give 40,000 strokes per minute. It lists 5 modes (whitening, cleaning, sensitive, polishing and massage), a timer that prompts you every 30 seconds and switches off at 2 minutes, a memory for the last mode used, and an IPX7 figure. AGARO's own page repeats the same feature list and sells the black (33438) and rose gold (33522) versions as one product.

The other brushes on the shortlist that their listings call sonic are Philips' Sonicare 1100, Caresmith's SPARK Vibrasonic and AGARO's Cosmic Lite in two versions (33881 and 34334). Lifelong's own page also calls its LLDC144 sonic, though its listing's motion field says "Oscillate". Against all of them, this one lists the most brush heads in the box, 5 plus an interdental head, and it is the only one of them to list a travel case. The Cosmic Lite 33881 lists 3 heads and an interdental head, the Cosmic Lite 34334 and the Caresmith 2 heads, and Philips 1. That, together with a warranty term on the listing, which the Sonicare's lacks, decided it. On modes it has 5. Philips' own data lists one mode, Clean, though the Sonicare listing's settings field says 3; Caresmith's bullets and its own page say 3, though its title says 5. The Cosmic Lite 33881 lists 6.

It doesn't lead on everything. Caresmith's listing claims up to 60 days a charge against this one's 25, names a USB charging cable in its box field, and says the brush can be used in the shower. Philips' US data gives the Sonicare a 2-year limited warranty, twice this one's 1 year, though the Sonicare's listing doesn't state it. For later, AGARO's site sells a Cosmic Plus refill with 4 brush heads and an interdental head.

  • Cut 1 listing that was the same Perfora PRO as one already on the shortlist, sold as a combo with brush heads, 1 Philips Sonicare listing with a pressure sensor that was out of stock when checked, and 1 sonic brush with no brand named.
  • Cut 2 listings with too little buyer history on Amazon.in to include.

We checked all but three against their brand's own pages; we found no brand page for AGARO's Cosmic Lite oscillating brush or Caresmith's SPARK New, and read none for Oral-B's Vitality 4-head pack.

What we ruled out

  • Oral-B Vitality (610515 black, 80312444 blue, 80718656 with 4 brush heads, 80695831 with travel case)A close call. It's the same oscillating-rotating round head with a 2-minute quadrant timer and a 2-year warranty, but every version lists 2 modes against the Vitality Pro's 3. The black and blue listings' box field reads only "Electric Toothbrush". The 4-head pack's title lists 4 brush heads, but neither its listing nor the travel-case version's has a box field; Oral-B's page gives the travel-case box as "1 Brush, 1 Travel Case". Oral-B's India page offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on the Vitality, which the Vitality Pro page doesn't mention. The 4-head pack shows "Non-Returnable" on Amazon.in, so ask Oral-B whether the guarantee covers an Amazon.in order before choosing one for it.
  • Oral-B Cross Action battery brush (82290740)An AA brush like the Pro Expert, and its title states a 90-day battery. But neither the listing nor Oral-B's page for it mentions a timer, while the Pro Expert has a 2-minute one.
  • Perfora PRO oscillating toothbrushIt states things the Oral-B rechargeables don't: up to 21 days per charge and USB Type-C charging, and it gives an 8800 RPM speed figure. Its listing gives a 2-year warranty, and Perfora's page says it covers manufacturing and delivery defects for 24 months. It lost on two counts: it has 2 modes, and the listing's details table gives no model number (the "8800" in the title is the speed), so it's hard to be sure which version would arrive.
  • Philips Sonicare 1100 (HX3641/02)Philips' data for the HX3641/02 gives a 14-day battery, a 2-minute SmarTimer with a 30-second QuadPacer, and one C1 SimplyClean head and a charger in the box. Philips' data lists one mode, Clean, though the listing's settings field says 3. Philips' US data for the HX3641/02 and its India data for the HX3641/11 both give a 2-year limited warranty, but the listing states no term, so ask Philips India whether it covers an HX3641/02. Neither the listing nor Philips' data gives an IPX figure. If you choose it, go by the model number: the listing's other fields name a 2100 and a "Série 4100".
  • Caresmith SPARK Vibrasonic (FCS0154)The closest sonic rival to the Cosmic Plus. It claims a longer charge, up to 60 days against 25, with USB-C charging, names a USB charging cable in its box field, and says it can be used in the shower; Caresmith's page agrees on the 60 days, USB-C, the 2-minute timer and IPX7. It lost on modes, 3 by its bullets and Caresmith's page (its title says 5) against 5, and on the box, 2 brush heads with no case listed. Its 1-year warranty appears in one bullet without saying what it covers, and the Caresmith page we read doesn't give a term.
  • AGARO Cosmic Lite oscillating (34648), Caresmith SPARK New (FCS0100-New) and Lifelong LLDC144Three rechargeables with a 2-minute timer and 3 or 5 modes, but the parts of their listings we could read state no warranty term, where the Vitality Pro's states 2 years. Lifelong's page lists a warranty card in the box without giving a term, and its box list names 1 bristle head where the listing's title says 2 heads. We found no AGARO page for model 34648 and have no Caresmith page for the SPARK New, whose listing claims up to 90 days a charge.

Before you buy

  1. Rotating or sonic

The Oral-B brushes here all use a round head that turns; Oral-B's pages for the Vitality range and the Pro Expert say it oscillates and rotates, and its iO9 page adds micro-vibrations. Perfora's brush oscillates too, and AGARO's 34648 lists rotating bristles. The sonic brushes vibrate the head instead: Philips gives 31000 strokes a minute for its Sonicare, and AGARO's listings give 31,000 to 40,000 for its Cosmic sonic brushes. Decide which kind you want before comparing models.

  2. Battery or charger

The Pro Expert and Cross Action take an AA battery. The rechargeables differ in what they state: Caresmith claims up to 90 days a charge for its SPARK New and 60 for its Vibrasonic, Lifelong 30, AGARO's Cosmic sonic brushes 25, Perfora 21 and Philips 14. AGARO bases its figure on two 2-minute brushings a day, and Perfora's page bases its 21 days on brushing twice a day; the Caresmith, Lifelong and Philips pages we read don't say how they count. The iO9 gives only a 3-hour charging time, and the Vitality Pro gives no figure at all.

  3. Check the return terms

The Amazon.in pages for the Cross Action, Pro Expert, iO9 and Vitality 4-head pack show "Non-Returnable", as do three AGARO listings (34334, 33881 and the rose gold Cosmic Plus, 33522), even though Oral-B's India pages for the Vitality, Pro Expert and Cross Action offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Look at the return line on the page of the brush you choose, and ask the brand how its guarantee works for an Amazon.in order.

  4. Brush heads are ongoing

Oral-B's pages say the Vitality, Vitality Pro and Pro Expert handles take its CrossAction, Precision Clean and Sensitive Clean heads, and one Vitality Pro image says to replace the head every 3 months. Philips lists click-on heads for the Sonicare, and AGARO sells a Cosmic Plus refill with 4 brush heads and an interdental head, which it says lasts up to 3 months.
