The short answer

Best for most people

American Tourister Ivy 2.0 Small Cabin Trolley Bag 55 cm

A polypropylene hard case on 8 spinner wheels that lists less weight than any other hard case here and stays at 55 cm tall, for anyone who flies with a cabin weight limit.

  • 2 kg 200 g, least of the hard cases shortlisted
  • 55 cm tall on 8 spinner wheels
  • 3-year warranty, claimable worldwide

The 2 alternatives, for other needs

  1. If you'd rather have a soft bag that expandsAristocrat Duralite Soft Case Cabin (STDRW55EBLU)

A soft polyester cabin bag on 8 wheels with an expander and a front pocket, whose size, weight and capacity agree between the listing and VIP's own page.

  2. If weight matters more than wheelsSafari Sprinter 55cm Duffle Trolley (SPRINTER55RLGRE)

A soft duffle on 2 in-line wheels that lists 1 kg 500 g, for travellers who want as much of a cabin weight limit as possible left for what they pack.

A cabin bag has to hold enough for a short trip while staying inside the size and weight your airline allows. Amazon.in listings make that harder than it should be, because the title, the bullets and the details table on one page don't always agree on wheels or material, and some details tables give two different capacities.

We read 30 Amazon.in listings and compared 27 of them on the size, weight, capacity, wheels and warranty each one states. The 3 we left out were all HRX bags: one was out of stock when we checked, and two had too little buyer history on Amazon.in to include. Nobody here has handled any of these bags, so this is a reading of listings and brand pages, and we say where those run out.

Our pick is the American Tourister Ivy 2.0, a hard case on 8 spinner wheels that lists 2 kg 200 g, less than any other hard case on the shortlist, stands 55 cm tall and carries a 3-year warranty. Its listing gives no capacity, though. If you want litres on paper, the Safari Astra Neo states 42 at 2 kg 300 g. If you'd rather have a soft bag that expands, the Aristocrat Duralite's size, weight and capacity match on its listing and on VIP's own page. And if every gram counts, Safari's Sprinter duffle trolley lists 1 kg 500 g, though it rolls on 2 wheels.

Why it's on the list

  • 2 kg 200 g, least of the hard cases shortlisted
  • 55 cm tall on 8 spinner wheels
  • 3-year warranty, claimable worldwide

Worth knowing

  • American Tourister's warranty page covers manufacturing defects only. It leaves out misuse, neglect, accidents, abrasion, water, normal wear and tear and transport damage, naming airlines as an example. Claims go to an approved Samsonite service centre, which decides whether the problem is covered; if it is, you're told whether the bag will be repaired or replaced. You pay to get the bag there, and you need the completed warranty certificate or the original receipt. The page also says the warranty applies only to the first buyer or a gift recipient.
  • The same page says the warranty's length is on the card inside the bag or in the product features on American Tourister's website. The website doesn't list the Ivy 2.0, so the 3-year term rests on the Amazon.in listing and whatever card comes in the box.
  • The page also says the lock is meant only to stop the bag opening by accident, not to prevent theft. And the listing doesn't mention an expander.

Skip it if you want the capacity in litres stated before you buy, or need an expander for the trip home.

The reasoning

The Ivy 2.0 is a hard case on 8 spinner wheels, with polypropylene named in the title, the bullets and the material field alike. Its listing gives 2 kg 200 g, the lowest weight of any hard case on the shortlist. The Safari Astra Neo comes next at 2 kg 300 g and the two Aristocrat Comet listings at 2 kg 400 g; every other hard case lists 2 kg 500 g or more. When an airline caps cabin bags by weight, the bag's own weight comes out of what you can pack.

It also stops at 55 cm tall, where the Astra Neo and the Comet list 56 cm. The listing's dimensions field reads 25.5 x 36.5 x 55 cm. Its 3-year warranty is described as global, and American Tourister's warranty page backs that up: repairs can be done at any approved Samsonite service centre in the world.

What it doesn't give is a capacity. Nothing in the title, bullets or details table puts a litre figure on it, and American Tourister's India online store doesn't list the Ivy 2.0, so there is no brand page to fill the gap. The Astra Neo states 42 litres at 2 kg 300 g and 56 cm, so if you'd rather know the volume before you buy, it is the closest alternative.

Neither this listing nor any other on the shortlist names an airline. Check 55 x 36.5 x 25.5 cm against your airline's own cabin limit before you order.

Aristocrat Duralite Soft Case Cabin (STDRW55EBLU)

Worth knowing

  • The listing's water-resistance field reads "Not Water Resistant". The Prisma Neo and Berlin listings both say water resistant.
  • VIP's page shows the Duralite Cabin in red only. The Amazon.in listing is the teal blue STDRW55EBLU, so the page's figures are for the same cabin model in another colour.
  • VIP's warranty policy says it applies to products bought on vipbags.com, while its coverage section also names VIP's authorised channels. It doesn't say whether a particular Amazon.in seller counts, so keep the invoice and ask VIP customer care (022-41724444) if you're unsure.

Skip it if you want a hard shell, or the lightest bag you can find.

The reasoning

Three soft bags on the shortlist list an expander: this Duralite, the Nasher Miles Berlin and the Safari Prisma Neo. The Duralite's listing gives 38 x 25 x 55 cm, 2 kg 980 g and 39 litres, and VIP's own page for the Duralite Cabin gives the same three figures (55.0 x 25.0 x 38.0 cm, 2.98 kg / 39 Litres). VIP's page says the expander adds up to 30% more room, and both the page and the listing describe a front pocket and 8 wheels.

Unlike the Prisma Neo, it keeps to a 55 cm by 25 cm outline, as the Berlin does (35 x 25 x 55 cm). The Prisma Neo is lighter at 2 kg 500 g and holds more, 55 litres, but it measures 57 cm tall and 29 cm deep, and its listing puts the expansion at 10%. The Berlin holds 48 litres and its listing describes a front compartment with a dual USB port, but it is the heaviest bag on the shortlist at 3 kg 220 g, and its warranty runs 2 years on the shell and 1 year on accessories, against 3 years for the Duralite.

VIP's page says the 3-year warranty gives full coverage on the fabric, zippers, wheels and handles. VIP's separate warranty policy is narrower than that line: it covers manufacturing defects, leaves out normal wear and tear, scratches, dents and damage caused by airlines, and lets VIP decide whether to repair or replace.

Safari Sprinter 55cm Duffle Trolley (SPRINTER55RLGRE)

Worth knowing

  • Safari's warranty policy applies here too: Safari repairs or replaces at its own discretion, wear and tear on wheels, zippers and trolley handles isn't covered, and a claim needs the original invoice plus a warranty card stamped by an authorised Safari dealer, with you bearing the cost of getting the bag to Safari. It also excludes damage from mishandling in transit, accidents, and rain or water.
  • The details table lists a combination lock, but neither the title nor the bullets mention a lock, so don't count on one.
  • We couldn't find the Sprinter in Safari's own online store, so the specs here come from the Amazon.in listing alone.

Skip it if you'd rather roll your bag upright on four or eight wheels, or want a hard shell.

The reasoning

This is a different kind of bag: a polyester duffle with a top opening, a telescopic handle and 2 in-line skate wheels. The listing gives 55 x 29 x 30 cm, 43 litres and 1 kg 500 g. No other bag on the shortlist lists less; the Ivy 2.0, the lightest hard case, lists 2 kg 200 g.

The trade-off is how it moves. With 2 in-line wheels you tilt it and pull it behind you, while every other bag on the shortlist lists spinner wheels, and all but the Duralite describe them as 360-degree. The listing doesn't mention an expander either.

Its listing states a 5-year warranty against manufacturing defects, in the title and again in the warranty field. Two other listings here give a 5-year figure: the SNITCH Loop, and the rose gold Safari Pentagon Pro, whose own bullet says 3 years.

What we ruled out

  • Safari Astra Neo 8 Wheels 56cm Cabin (ASTRANEO564WDKC)The closest call. It states 42 litres, which the Ivy 2.0 doesn't, with 8 spinner wheels and a 3-year warranty. But it lists 2 kg 300 g against the Ivy's 2 kg 200 g and stands 56 cm tall against 55 cm, and its listing gives only the broader "Plastic" in the material field. Pick it over the Ivy if a stated capacity matters more to you than those two figures.
  • Safari Thorium Royale 55cm (THORIUMROYALE554WVAN)The one listing here that mentions a TSA-approved lock, plus a wet pouch, on 8 wheels at 55 cm. But at 2 kg 500 g it is 300 g heavier than the Ivy 2.0, and its listing gives two capacities, 46 litres in one field and 50.6 litres in another. Its 3-year term appears in a bullet only; the details table has no warranty field.
  • Safari Thorium Neo with laptop compartment, 55cm (THORIUMNEOFO554WVAN, THORIUMNEOFO554WGLU)Worth a look if you carry a laptop: both listings describe a dedicated laptop section, with 43 litres, 8 wheels and a 3-year warranty at 35 x 25 x 55 cm. At 2 kg 700 g, though, they weigh half a kilo more than the Ivy 2.0.
  • SNITCH Loop cabin bag (SNCA040S263001)It lists a 5-year warranty and a free shoe bag. But the listing gives no dimensions and no capacity anywhere, so there's nothing to check against an airline's limit, and its title says polypropylene while the material field says polycarbonate. It lists 2 kg 500 g on 4 wheels.
  • Aristocrat Comet Cabin (COMETS55TGN, COMETS55CPG)Close on weight at 2 kg 400 g, with 8 wheels and a 3-year warranty. But both listings call the shell polycarbonate in the title and polyester in the material field, only the grey one gives a capacity (35 litres), and VIP's page for the Comet Cabin gives no dimensions, material or capacity to settle it.
  • Nasher Miles Berlin 20 inch soft cabin bagOn paper it holds more than the Duralite, 48 litres with a 25% expander, and adds a front compartment with a dual USB port, on 8 wheels; and Nasher Miles' own page agrees on its size and weight, though the page's spec table lists 4 wheels against 8 in its own description and on the listing. But at 3 kg 220 g it is the heaviest bag on the shortlist, and the warranty is 2 years on the shell and 1 year on accessories.

Before you buy

  1. Check the size against your airline yourself

Many listings on the shortlist mention carry-on use. Five say they meet airline-approved carry-on dimensions, the SNITCH Loop calls itself airline approved, and the two Thorium Neo listings without a laptop section say they meet most domestic carry-on size requirements, but none of them names an airline. The longest sides on the upright bags run from 55 cm to 58 cm (the Aristocrat Altitude); the Sprinter duffle lists 55 x 29 x 30 cm. Measure against your airline's own published cabin limit before ordering.

  2. The bag's own weight counts

Listed weights run from 1 kg 500 g (the Safari Sprinter duffle) to 3 kg 220 g (the Nasher Miles Berlin). If your airline caps cabin bags by weight, that difference comes out of what you can pack.

  3. Read the warranty conditions, not just the years

Safari's, VIP's and American Tourister's warranty terms all leave the choice between repair and replacement to the brand or its service centre, and all exclude normal wear and damage from handling in transit; VIP and American Tourister name airlines outright. Safari asks for the invoice plus a warranty card stamped by an authorised dealer, while American Tourister asks for the completed certificate or the original receipt. The Nasher Miles listing gives 2 years on the shell and 1 on accessories, and the Kamiliant listing states no term at all.

  4. When the title and the table disagree

The Safari Thorium Neo (THORIUMNEO554WGLU, THORIUMNEO554WBLK) and Aristocrat Airpro (AIRPRO55CTL) titles say 8 wheels while their details tables say 4. The Aristocrat Comet's title says polycarbonate while its material field says polyester, and the SNITCH Loop's says polypropylene against polycarbonate. If the difference matters to you, ask the seller before you order.
