The short answer

Best for most people

Remington Ceramic Straight 230 (S3500)

A ceramic straightener with a temperature wheel from 150 to 230°C and a 3-year guarantee stated on the listing, for anyone who wants to set the heat to their hair and have a 60-minute auto shut-off as a backstop. Remington still says never to leave it unattended while plugged in.

  • Temperature wheel, 150 to 230°C
  • Stated auto shut-off after 60 minutes
  • 3-year guarantee on the listing

The 2 alternatives, for other needs

  1. If you'd like wider plates and a digital displayHavells Wide Hair Straightener (HS4222)

A wide-plate straightener with 5 temperature settings from 150 to 230°C on a digital display, for people who'd rather cover more hair per pass and see the setting as a number.

  2. If you'd rather have two simple settingsPhilips 2000 Straightener (BHS393/40)

A titanium-ceramic straightener with two fixed settings, 190°C and 210°C, for people who'd rather pick one of two than dial in a number.

You want a straightener that gets hot enough for your hair, lets you turn it down when it doesn't need that much, and switches itself off if it's left on. Several of the Amazon.in listings we read give a top temperature and stop there.

We read 30 Amazon.in listings, shortlisted 18 and compared them on how the heat is set, plate size, heat-up time, automatic shut-off and the warranty each listing puts in writing. For six of them, from Remington, Havells, Philips and Ikonic, we also read the brand's own product page; Remington's came from its UK site and instruction booklet, because we couldn't reach an Indian Remington site. Nobody here has used these straighteners, so this is a reading of specifications, and we say where the information runs out.

Our pick is the Remington Ceramic Straight 230 (S3500): a temperature wheel from 150 to 230°C, a stated 60-minute auto shut-off and a 3-year guarantee stated on the listing (another S3500 listing says 2 years, and neither names an Indian service contact). If you'd like wider plates and a digital display, the Havells HS4222 is the alternative. If two fixed settings are all you want, Philips' BHS393/40 offers 190°C and 210°C; Philips' NourishCare BHS526 has the same two settings but is designed to be used with serum strips that Philips says to replace each time you style.

Remington Ceramic Straight 230 (S3500)

Remington · Pick 1 of 3

A ceramic straightener with a temperature wheel from 150 to 230°C and a 3-year guarantee stated on the listing, for anyone who wants to set the heat to their hair and have a 60-minute auto shut-off as a backstop. Remington still says never to leave it unattended while plugged in.

Why it's on the list

  • Temperature wheel, 150 to 230°C
  • Stated auto shut-off after 60 minutes
  • 3-year guarantee on the listing

Worth knowing

  • The 3-year term on the listing matches Remington's UK booklet, which says defects affecting how it works are put right by repair or replacement at Remington's option, provided it's used and maintained as instructed, excludes consumables, and doesn't cover damage from repair by an unauthorised dealer. The booklet's extra year for registering online is a UK scheme, and the listing gives no importer or India service contact, so keep the invoice.
  • The listing's details table is muddled: it gives a 110 Volts input, a lithium-ion battery and a top setting of 229.4 degrees. Remington's booklet describes a corded, multivoltage straightener with settings up to 230°C, and notes that at 120V times and temperatures may vary.
  • Remington's booklet warns against using it near a bath, shower or basin, says to unplug it after use in a bathroom, never to leave it unattended while plugged in, not to let it touch the face, neck or scalp, to keep it out of reach of young children while it's on and cooling down, and not to use hairspray while styling because hairspray is flammable. It also says to put it down on a heat-resistant surface, keep the cord away from heated surfaces, and let it cool down before cleaning it or putting it away, including in its pouch. It also says to stop using it if the cord is damaged or the straightener malfunctions, and that it isn't meant for commercial or salon use.
  • The listing we link is titled "Remington S 3500 Hair Straightener"; Remington calls the model Ceramic Straight 230.

Skip it if you want plates wider than a slim straightener's, or a digital readout of the temperature.

The reasoning

The listing gives a temperature wheel running from 150 to 230°C, and Remington's UK page says that wheel has 30 settings. That matters more than the top number. Remington's own booklet suggests 150 to 170°C for thin, fine, damaged or bleached hair and 200 to 230°C for thick and difficult-to-style hair, cautioning that the hottest settings should only be used by experienced stylers, so being able to turn it down is worth more than a high ceiling. The plates are ceramic and floating, 110mm long on Remington's page, and both the listing and the page say it is ready in 15 seconds.

What decided it over our two alternatives is the automatic shut-off and the length of the guarantee. The listing and Remington's booklet both say it switches itself off after 60 minutes. Neither the Havells HS4222 nor the Philips BHS393/40 mentions a shut-off on its listing or on its brand page. The listing also states a 3 years guarantee, where Havells and Philips each give 2 years. The Remington listing names no importer or Indian service centre, while the Havells and Philips listings both name an Indian importer, so how you would claim on Remington's longer guarantee in India isn't clear from what we read.

It comes with a heat-proof pouch and has a plate lock and a swivel cord; the listing and Remington's UK page both list the lock, and the booklet lists a hinge lock, swivel cord and heat-resistant pouch. The S3500 listing we link gives 272 g and a second S3500 listing gives 336 g, against 367 g for the Havells and 330 g for the Philips. Remington's page doesn't give a weight.

Ikonic's Glam came closest on shut-off: Ikonic's page lists a rotating temperature control up to 230°C and the same 60-minute auto shut-off. Its Amazon.in listing gives no warranty term, though, and Ikonic's page gives 1 year from the date of purchase.

Havells Wide Hair Straightener (HS4222)

Havells · Pick 2 of 3

A wide-plate straightener with 5 temperature settings from 150 to 230°C on a digital display, for people who'd rather cover more hair per pass and see the setting as a number.

Worth knowing

  • Neither the listing nor Havells' page mentions an automatic shut-off, so don't count on one.
  • Havells' page lists a 2-year guarantee and the listing's warranty field says 2 years; neither spells out what the guarantee covers or excludes.
  • The listing's Model Name field reads only "Hair Straightener". Match HS4222 in the title and the model-number field.

Skip it if you want a straightener whose listing states an automatic shut-off, or a guarantee longer than 2 years.

The reasoning

The plates are the reason to look at this one. Both the listing and Havells' page give them as 40 mm x 100 mm, keratin-infused and floating, twice the width of the Philips BHS393/40's 20x90mm plates. Remington's page gives only a plate length for the S3500, 110mm, and calls it a slim straightener.

Heat runs over the same range as the Remington, 150 to 230°C, but in 5 settings shown on a digital display rather than a wheel. Havells' page lists 100 V - 240 V, and the listing's title calls it worldwide voltage. There's a plate lock and a swivel cord with a hanging loop.

It lost to the Remington on the shut-off and the guarantee: neither the listing nor Havells' page mentions an automatic shut-off, and the guarantee is 2 years against Remington's 3. Neither gives a heat-up time either.

If you'd rather have two simple settings

Philips 2000 Straightener (BHS393/40)

Philips · Pick 3 of 3

A titanium-ceramic straightener with two fixed settings, 190°C and 210°C, for people who'd rather pick one of two than dial in a number.

Worth knowing

  • Neither the listing nor Philips' page mentions an automatic shut-off.
  • The plates are 20x90mm, half the width of the Havells HS4222's 40 mm x 100 mm plates.
  • Philips' specification lists a 2-year worldwide warranty and the listing says 2 year manufacturer; neither page we read spells out what it covers.

Skip it if your hair needs more than 210°C to hold straight, or you want a straightener whose listing states an automatic shut-off.

The reasoning

Philips' page gives exactly two settings, 190°C and 210°C. It describes the lower one for last-minute touch-ups and gentle styling and the higher one for long-lasting results. That's a narrower range than the Remington's or the Havells', with a top setting of 210°C rather than 230°C.

The plates are ceramic infused with titanium, 20x90mm on both the listing and Philips' page, and it's ready in 60 seconds by both. Philips' page also lists a plate lock, a storage hook, a 1.6 m swivel cord and universal voltage from 110-240 volts.

It stands behind the Remington because neither the listing nor Philips' page mentions an automatic shut-off, and Philips gives a 2-year worldwide warranty against Remington's 3 years. Its heat-up time is also 60 seconds to the Remington's 15.

Philips' own NourishCare BHS526 is the near-twin: Philips' page gives it the same 190°C - 210°C settings, the same 60-second heat-up and a 2-year worldwide guarantee, with wider plates at 29x90mm. We kept the BHS393/40 because the BHS526 is built around serum strips in detachable brackets, and Philips says each set of strips is good for one styling session and should be replaced every time you style. The box has 2 pairs. Philips' BHS393/40 page lists no strips or other parts to replace, and its listing gives 330 g to the BHS526's 400 g.

What we ruled out

  • Remington S3500 (second listing)The same S3500, listed separately with a slightly different title. Its warranty field says 2 Year, where the S3500 listing we link and Remington's UK booklet both say 3 years, so we link the one that states the longer term.
  • Ikonic Professional GlamThe closest call. Ikonic's page lists a rotating temperature control up to 230°C and a 60-minute auto shut-off, like the Remington. Its listing gives no warranty term, only a warranty card in the box, and Ikonic's page gives 1 year from the date of purchase against Remington's 3. Neither gives the lowest temperature it can be set to.
  • Philips NourishCare (BHS526/00)Two settings like the BHS393/40, 190°C - 210°C on Philips' page, with the same 60-second heat-up and 2-year worldwide term and wider 29x90mm plates. It is designed to be used with serum strips that Philips says to replace each time you style, and the box has 2 pairs. Philips' BHS393/40 page lists nothing of the kind. Neither the BHS526 listing nor its own Philips page mentions an automatic shut-off. The listing also makes claims about what the serum does for hair; those are Philips' claims, and nothing we read lets us check them.
  • Ikonic Professional Pro Titanium Shine 3.0A digital 150°C to 230°C range and 1.5-inch floating titanium plates, and the listing's title names an auto shut-off, though Ikonic's page doesn't mention one. The listing gives no warranty term; Ikonic's page gives 1 year from the date of purchase. The two disagree on weight (867 g on the listing, 992 g on Ikonic's page) and on country of origin (China on the listing, India on the page).
  • Remington S 8540Its listing states a 5 Year warranty and 110mm floating plates with a temperature lock, but gives no temperature range and no heat-up time, and says nothing about an automatic shut-off. We read two of the three pages of Remington UK's straightener range; they list products by name, not model number. The S 8540 listing calls it Keratin Protect and the range lists a Keratin Protect Intelligent Straightener, but nothing we read ties that page to the S 8540, so we couldn't use it to fill those gaps.
  • Remington S1510Its listing gives the same 3 years guarantee as the S3500 listing we link, and it heats to 220 degrees, ready in 30 seconds. Its listing doesn't mention any way to set the temperature, or an automatic shut-off.

Before you buy

  1. Make sure you can turn it down

A top figure tells you little on its own. Remington's booklet suggests 150 to 170°C for thin, fine, damaged or bleached hair and 200 to 230°C for thick and difficult-to-style hair, says the hottest settings should only be used by experienced stylers, and says to start on the lower settings. The Vega VHSH-42 and the Remington S1510 listings give a single heat figure with no control described.

  2. Look for a stated auto shut-off

4 of the 18 shortlisted listings mention an automatic shut-off, and two of those are the same Remington S3500. If you're the kind of person who wonders whether you left it on, that line is worth finding before you order.

  3. Read the warranty field itself

Terms vary a lot on this shortlist: 5 years on the Remington S 8540, 3 on the S3500, 2 on the Havells and Philips picks, 1 on the Vega VHSH-42. Four Ikonic listings, the Pro Titanium Shine 3.0, Glam, S3+ and Black Beauty, state no term at all. Two listings for the same S3500 even disagree.

  4. Match plate width to your hair

The Havells HS4222's plates are 40 mm x 100 mm, and Havells says they straighten hair in few glides. The Philips BHS393/40's are 20x90mm. Ikonic's S3+ listing title aims slim plates at short hair and bangs, though a bullet on the same listing calls them wide.
