The short answer

Best for most people

Havells Crisp Plus 2-slice toaster (GHCPTCJK075)

A 2-slice toaster whose listing, and Havells' page for a closely matching Crisp Plus model, agree on reheat, defrost and cancel, 7 browning settings and a 2-year warranty.

  • Reheat, defrost and cancel functions
  • 7 browning settings, 750 W
  • 2-year warranty (Havells' page adds an asterisk)

Most pop-up toasters on Amazon.in brown two slices and push them back up. The differences sit lower down the listing: whether it can rewarm a cold slice or take bread straight from the freezer, whether you can stop it mid-cycle, whether there's a tray to catch crumbs, and how long the warranty runs and on what terms.

We read 30 Amazon.in listings and shortlisted 18, mostly 2-slice toasters plus two 4-slice models. Ten more real pop-up toasters, including models from Crompton, Sujata, Amazon Basics and KENT, were cut for having too little buyer history, so they aren't compared here. For the Havells, Philips, iBELL, Bajaj and Morphy Richards toasters we weighed most closely, we also read a brand product page (for the Havells, a closely matching Crisp Plus model; for the Morphy Richards, Bajaj Electricals' page for its black variant), and for the Philips its user manual. Nobody here has used these toasters; this is a reading of what the listings and brand pages state, and we say where they run out.

Our pick is the Havells Crisp Plus (GHCPTCJK075), a 750 W, 2-slice toaster with 7 browning settings, reheat, defrost and cancel, a crumb tray and a 2-year warranty, all of which Havells' page for the closely matching GHCPTSIK075 repeats. If you also want to warm buns and rolls, the Philips HD2582/00 has a warming rack for them. If you toast for several people at once, the iBELL CrustoF40 takes 4 slices and keeps the reheat, defrost and cancel buttons.

Why it's on the list

  • Reheat, defrost and cancel functions
  • 7 browning settings, 750 W
  • 2-year warranty (Havells' page adds an asterisk)

Worth knowing

  • The Havells page we read carries the SKU GHCPTSIK075, not the listing's GHCPTCJK075. It has the same Crisp Plus name, 750 W and black colour, but we couldn't find a Havells page for the listing's exact code, so read the page as a close match rather than proof.
  • The box contents disagree. Havells' page lists 1 toaster and 1 cover, the listing's bullets say toaster and crumb tray, and its details table says 1 toaster and instruction manual. Neither the listing nor Havells' page says what the 2-year warranty excludes or whether you need to register, so keep your invoice.
  • Havells' product page gives no usage or safety instructions, and its manuals page lists no toaster manual. Read the manual in the box before first use.

Skip it if you often toast four slices at a time, or want to warm buns and rolls on the same machine.

The reasoning

On paper the Crisp Plus covers each thing we looked for. Its listing names 7 heat settings, reheat, defrost and cancel functions, auto bread centering, cool-touch handles and a removable crumb tray, and it draws 750 W. Havells' own product page lists its functions as toast, reheat, defrost and cancel, gives 7 temperature setting options and 750 W, and calls the tray a drawer-type crumb tray.

What decided it, against the other 2-slice toasters whose Amazon.in listings name all three functions, was that a Havells page for the closely matching Crisp Plus (GHCPTSIK075) backs the whole set; we couldn't find one for the listing's exact code. Three other 2-slice toasters on the shortlist also list reheat, defrost and cancel: the Tower Windsor, the Hamilton Beach 22796 and the wipro Vesta, and we have no brand page for any of them. The Tower also states self-centring slots and a longer warranty if you register it, 2 years plus 6 months, but its title gives 800W while its details table gives 1350 Watts, and with no Tower page to check we couldn't tell which is right. The wipro gives 1 year of warranty against the Havells' 2. The Hamilton Beach's details table gives its voltage as 120 Volts, and its listing states no warranty term.

The Havells listing has loose ends of its own. Its material field says Plastic while its bullets describe a stainless steel housing; Havells' page sides with the bullets and lists a stainless steel cage housing. On wattage, settings and functions, the listing and the page agree.

Worth knowing

  • Philips' manual says never to put rolls directly on top of the toaster, always to use the warming rack, and not to run it without the crumb tray. It also says not to clean it with scouring pads, abrasive cleaning agents or aggressive liquids, and not to use any tool to clean the slots.
  • Before first use, the manual says to put the toaster in a well-ventilated room and let it run a few cycles at the highest browning setting with no bread in it.
  • Neither the listing nor Philips' page says what the 2-year warranty excludes or whether you need to register the toaster.

Skip it if you never warm buns or rolls and would rather have a listing that states every function itself.

The reasoning

No other listing among the 18 we shortlisted mentions a bun rack. Philips' page describes an integrated rack for heating rolls, pastries or buns, and the user manual says you push down a lever to unfold it, then turn the browning control to the bun-warming setting.

The listing undersells it. It names a cancel button and self-centering slots but says nothing about a crumb tray, reheat or defrost. Philips' user manual, which covers the HD2581, HD2582 and HD2584, shows a crumb tray and reheating and defrosting settings on the browning control, and Philips' page lists a defrost function and a 2-year warranty, matching the listing's 2 years on product.

We put the Havells first because its listing states every function itself, while the Philips listing leaves the crumb tray, reheat and defrost to Philips' user manual (and, for defrost, Philips' product page), and its own figures don't agree: 6 browning settings in the title, 8 in the bullets and 5 in the details table. Philips' page settles it at 8. On power, the listing gives 830W and Philips' page a range of 760-900 W.

Worth knowing

  • The listing's details table gives 10 settings, against the 7 browning levels in its bullets and on iBELL's page.
  • iBELL's page gives no usage or safety instructions. It lists a user manual in the package, so read that before first use.
  • It is listed at 35D x 14.5W x 17H centimetres. Its 35 cm length is longer than any listed side of either 2-slice pick, so measure the counter space you have.

Skip it if you rarely toast more than two slices at once, or want a full 2-year term without registering.

The reasoning

Two 4-slice toasters made the shortlist, the iBELL CrustoF40 and the Morphy Richards AT 402. The iBELL draws 1400 W and lists 7 browning levels, a removable crumb tray and separate defrost, reheat and cancel buttons with an LED indicator. iBELL's own page repeats the 1400 W, the 4-slice capacity, the 7 levels and that function list.

The Morphy Richards AT 402 (370060) draws a little more, 1450 Watts, and lists 7 browning levels, bread centring, a removable crumb tray and a cancel function. Its warranty is the plainer of the two: the listing and Bajaj Electricals' page for the black AT402 both give 2 years, with no registration step attached to the warranty. But neither the parts of its listing we could read nor that page mentions reheat or defrost, and those were the functions we weighed most.

The iBELL's warranty needs a step from you. The listing gives 1 year standard plus 1 more year if you register within 30 days of delivery, and the warranty section on iBELL's page says only 1 Year standard warranty, even though the product titles on both say 2 Year Warranty.

Cut 12: 10 × too little buyer history on Amazon.in · 2 × not a pop-up toaster, by its own title

  • Cut 10 listings with too little buyer history on Amazon.in to include.
  • Those were real pop-up toasters, from KENT, Sujata, Morphy Richards, Lifelong, Crompton, Amazon Basics, Sheffield, Syntro and Faber, so those models aren't compared here. The Morphy Richards one was a black colour variant, with its own model code, of the white Morphy Richards four-slice toaster on the shortlist.
  • Cut 2 listings that weren't pop-up toasters: a non-electric gas sandwich toaster from Tosaa and a Borosil sandwich maker.
  • Compared the 18 that were left on slot count, wattage, browning settings, whether reheat, defrost and cancel are listed, the crumb tray, and the warranty term and its conditions.
  • Read the brand's own page for the Havells, Philips, iBELL, Bajaj and Morphy Richards toasters we weighed most closely, plus Philips' user manual, and say below where a page and its listing disagree. We have no brand page for Tower, Hamilton Beach, wipro or KENT.

What we ruled out

  • Tower Windsor 2 Slice (TWR-WDSR-TOASTER-GRY)It lists the same reheat, defrost and cancel set as the Havells, plus self-centring slots and a longer warranty if you register it (2 years plus 6 months). But its title says 800W and its details table 1350 Watts, its settings field reads "3, 7", and we have no brand page for Tower to settle either.
  • Hamilton Beach 2-Slice (22796)On paper it has reheat, defrost and cancel, 7 browning levels, 850 Watts and a stainless steel body. But its details table gives the voltage as 120 Volts, where every other listing that gives a voltage field reads between 220 and 240, and its title, bullets and details state no warranty term.
  • wipro Vesta (VA021020)Close to the Havells on paper: 800 Watts, 7 browning levels, reheat, defrost, cancel and a crumb tray. Its warranty is 1 year against the Havells' 2, and its bullets give the power as 78 watts and the voltage as 22-24 volts, against 800 Watts in its title and 240 Volts in its details table.
  • KENT Pop Up Toaster 850 Watts (116167)It lists 7 browning modes, reheat and defrost and a crumb tray, but its listing names no cancel button and states no warranty term.
  • Morphy Richards AT 402 (370060)The other 4-slice option, with a flat 2-year warranty on both the listing and Bajaj Electricals' page for the black AT402 and 1450 Watts. Neither the parts of its listing we could read nor that page mentions reheat or defrost. Its listing says it comes with a 16A three-pin plug.
  • Bajaj ATX 4 (270030)A slide-out crumb tray, mid-cycle cancel and a 2-year warranty, all repeated on Bajaj Electricals' page, plus a dust cover on the listing that the page's contents line doesn't include. It has 6 browning levels, and neither the listing nor Bajaj's page mentions reheat or defrost.

Before you buy

  1. Look for reheat and defrost, not just browning levels

Of the 18 shortlisted listings, 6 name both reheat and defrost. The wipro listing, for one, describes reheat as rewarming slices without going through a whole toasting cycle again, and defrost as being for frozen bread.

  2. Read how the warranty is earned

The iBELL and Tower listings add their extra cover only if you register the toaster, iBELL within 30 days of delivery. The Havells, Philips, Bajaj and Morphy Richards listings give 2 years and don't mention registration. Keep the invoice either way.

  3. Four slices take more room and power

The two 4-slice listings draw 1400 and 1450 watts, against 750 W for the Havells pick, and the Morphy Richards listing says it comes with a 16A plug. Check your socket and counter space before ordering.

  4. Run it empty first

Philips' manual says to run a new toaster for a few cycles at its highest setting with no bread in it, in a well-ventilated room. Check your own toaster's manual for the same step.
