A 46-litre soft duffle on two wheels with a push-button handle, for anyone who wants a mid-size wheeled duffle whose numbers hold up against the brand's own page.

  • 46 litres, 53.5 x 28.5 x 30 cm
  • 1500-day warranty; spare parts shipped to you
  • Size and weight match uppercase's page

The alternative, for other needs

Duffle trolley listings are hard to compare. The same bag can show a different weight or size depending on which colour you click, and several claim more litres than their own outer measurements could hold.

We read 30 Amazon.in listings and shortlisted 20, then compared capacity, outer size, weight, the handle and the warranty each one states. Where we could find a brand page for the model, we checked the listing against it: uppercase's Grid and JFK pages, VIP's pages for the Aristocrat Rookie trolley in both its sizes and for the Skybags Hustle trolley, Harissons' Holdall page, and the warranty policies of uppercase and Safari. Nobody here has handled these bags, so this is a reading of what the listings and brands put in writing. Four duffle trolleys, from Wildcraft, Skybags, Aristocrat and VIP, were left out because their listings had too little buyer history, not because of anything about the bags. Two Aristocrat Rookie listings were also set aside as repeats of the 63 cm Rookie on our shortlist, though they may not be the same bag: one's title says 53 cm and the other's 28 cm, and VIP sells the Rookie in a cabin and a medium size; and a red Rookie 63 cm was cut because its listing doesn't mention wheels or a trolley.

Our pick is the uppercase Grid 52 cm in teal (GRID52EDBTEL): 46 litres, 1.61 kg and a 1500-day warranty, with the listing and uppercase's own page agreeing on its size and weight. If you need more room, the uppercase JFK 62 holds 60 litres on the same warranty terms.

Why it's on the list

  • 46 litres, 53.5 x 28.5 x 30 cm
  • 1500-day warranty; spare parts shipped to you
  • Size and weight match uppercase's page

Worth knowing

  • Buy the teal listing. The maroon Grid listing (GRID52EDBMRN) shows 29.7 x 23.8 x 18.7 cm and 3 kg 630 g, and uppercase's own page for the maroon Grid small gives 63 x 29 x 33 cm and 60L, which are the JFK 62's figures. Only the teal listing and teal page agree with each other.
  • The 46 litres come from uppercase's page; the parts of the teal listing we read give no capacity, and they don't mention a lock either.
  • uppercase's warranty goes only to the first buyer or gift recipient, repairs must be done at its approved service centres, and it doesn't cover damage in transit (you claim that from the airline or carrier), misuse, accidents, prolonged exposure to water or normal wear and tear. A claim under the global warranty needs proof of international travel, your address, and the e-warranty certificate or the original GST receipt. The policy also says uppercase may revoke the warranty at its sole discretion and can change what counts as a covered defect without notice.
  • uppercase's 46 litres is a shade more than its stated 53.5 x 28.5 x 30 cm outer size works out to.

Skip it if you want a built-in lock (neither the listing nor uppercase's page mentions one), or need much more than 46 litres.

The reasoning

The Grid is a soft recycled-polyester duffle with two wheels, a push-button telescopic handle, twin grab handles and a U-shaped opening to the main compartment. uppercase's page gives it 46 litres inside an outer size of 53.5 x 28.5 x 30 cm and a weight of 1.61 kg. The teal listing gives the same size and the same weight (1 kg 610 g). That kind of agreement is less common on this shortlist than it should be: the Aristocrat Rookie and Skybags Hustle listings each give a different warranty term from the brand's own page, while Harissons' page offers up to 48 months including an extended warranty, if registered within 15 days, where the Holdall listing states 1 year.

Both the listing and uppercase's page put the warranty at 1500 days, and the listing's bullets call it 4 years international. uppercase's policy says that if a wheel, grab handle, telescopic handle or lock has a covered defect, it will ship the replacement part with video instructions for fitting it yourself, and that zip and stitching defects are repaired at its service centres in India. It decides at its discretion whether to repair or replace.

The closest rival was Safari's Sprinter 55 (SPRINTER55RLGRE). On its listing it is a little lighter at 1 kg 500 g, states a longer 5-year international warranty and has a combination lock field, while the Grid holds 46 litres to its 43. We went with the Grid because Safari's own store doesn't list the Sprinter, so nothing outside the listing backs its figures, and because of how the two warranty policies handle zips. Both cover only manufacturing defects and both exclude normal wear and tear and water damage (uppercase where exposure is prolonged or unusual). Safari's lists zip bursts among the damage it excludes and wants a dealer-stamped warranty card with the invoice. uppercase's repairs zip and stitching defects, but only at its service centres in India, and a global claim needs the e-warranty certificate or GST receipt.

Worth knowing

  • The parts of the listing we read give a telescopic handle but don't mention a push-button handle like the Grid's, or a lock for the bag.
  • The warranty conditions are the same uppercase policy as the Grid's: first buyer or gift recipient only, approved service centres, no cover for transit damage, prolonged exposure to water or normal wear and tear.
  • At 1.86 kg it is heavier than the Lavie Lino 63 cm on either of that bag's listed weights.

Skip it if you'd trade a shorter warranty for a lighter bag at this size.

The reasoning

The JFK is uppercase's larger duffle trolley: 60 litres in an outer size of 63 x 29 x 33 cm, weighing 1.86 kg. The listing and uppercase's page agree on all three (the listing gives the weight as 1 kg 860 g), and both state the same 1500-day warranty as the Grid, under the same policy. The title calls it 62cm; the length stated on both the listing and the page is 63 cm.

Three bags of 60 litres or more came close. Lavie Sport's Lino 63 cm is lighter on paper, but its two listings with the same size disagree on weight for the same 63 x 30 x 32 cm size (1 kg for the teal WDOGE1409043N3, 1 kg 500 g for the black DGGE840019M3), its warranty is 2 years, and Lavie's main store doesn't list the Lino to settle it. Safari's Buzz 63 (BUZZ63RLRED) states 3 years and weighs 1 kg 890 g, but its 60 litres is more than its own 63 x 28 x 32 cm outer size can hold. Lavie's Galactic claims 65 litres in 62 x 31 x 32 cm, which runs into the same problem, and weighs 2 kg 200 g.

Aristocrat's Rookie 63 cm (DFTRO62ETBL) is the other bag near this size. VIP's page for the medium Rookie, sold under that part code, gives it 63 litres (a shade more than its own 62 x 35 x 29 cm works out to), but its listing says 53 litres, and the two also differ on the warranty (5 years on the listing, 3 years on VIP's page). Whichever weight you go by, 2000 grams or 2 kg 80 g on the listing or 2.1 kg on VIP's page, it is heavier than the JFK's 1.86 kg.

  • Cut (10)

Cut 10: 4 × too little buyer history on Amazon.in · 2 × not a duffle trolley bag, by its own title · 2 × out of stock when checked · 2 × duplicate listing of a shortlisted model

  • Cut 2 listings that didn't read as a duffle trolley bag, because neither mentions wheels or a trolley in its title, bullets or spec table: the smaller of two Skybags Cardiff duffles, and an Aristocrat Rookie in red whose title gives the same size as the teal Rookie we kept. That red Rookie may well be the same wheeled bag in another colour.
  • Cut 2 listings that were out of stock when we checked: the larger Skybags Cardiff and Aristocrat's Cadet.
  • Cut 4 listings with too little buyer history on Amazon.in to include. All 4 were duffle trolleys: Wildcraft's Travel Classic, Skybags' Muse, Aristocrat's Blaze and VIP's DFT cabin trolley. They were left out for that reason alone.
  • Cut 2 Aristocrat Rookie listings as repeats of the teal Rookie on our shortlist because they share its model name, though they may not be the same bag: their titles give smaller sizes than the one we kept, and VIP sells the Rookie in a cabin and a medium size.
  • Compared the 20 that were left on capacity, outer size, weight, handle type and the warranty each listing states, and checked whether the litres claimed fit inside the stated outer size. Read uppercase's Grid and JFK pages, VIP's two Rookie trolley pages and its Skybags Hustle page, Harissons' Holdall page, and the warranty policies of uppercase and Safari. Safari's own store doesn't list the Sprinter, Imperia or Buzz, Lavie's lavieworld.com store doesn't list the Lino or Galactic (its old Lino page returns an error), and the Lavie Sport site wouldn't load, so for those we had the Amazon.in listings alone. We have no brand page for M MEDLER or TEKCOOL.

What we ruled out

  • Safari Sprinter 55 cm duffle trolley (SPRINTER55RLGRE)A close call. Its listing gives 43 litres, 55 x 29 x 30 cm, 1 kg 500 g, a combination lock in its details and a 5-year international warranty against manufacturing defects. Safari's own store doesn't list it, and Safari's warranty policy lists damage such as zip bursts as excluded and needs a dealer-stamped warranty card plus the invoice. (Like uppercase's policy, it also excludes wear and tear and water damage, which uppercase limits to prolonged or unusual exposure.)
  • Aristocrat Rookie 63 cm duffle trolley, teal (part DFTRO62ETBL)Its listing and VIP's page for the medium Rookie, which carries the same part code, disagree on most of the figures that matter: 53 against 63 litres, a 5 years international warranty against 3 years (VIP's page says the cover takes in the fabric, zippers, wheels and handles), and 2000 grams in the bullets or 2 kg 80 g in the details against 2.1 kg. The listing also gives two outer sizes, 63 x 30 x 33 cm in its bullets and 63 x 21 x 16 cm in its details, while VIP's page says 62 x 35 x 29 cm, which works out to a shade under the 63 litres it claims. On any of those weights it is heavier than both uppercase picks, and its listing says it is not water resistant, where both uppercase listings say water resistant.
  • Skybags Hustle DFT 55 (DFTHUS55GRN)The listing and VIP's page don't describe the same bag on paper: 1 Year against 3-year warranty, 1 kg 850 g against 0.617 kg, 51 against 47 litres, and 56.5 x 33 x 29.5 cm against 29.0 x 55.0 x 32.0 cm. VIP's capacity and weight figures would beat the Grid's, but with this many mismatches we can't tell which set is right.
  • Lavie Sport Lino 53 cm (DGGE530040M2) and Lino M (DGGE038040M2)The 53 cm is listed at 800 g and 55 litres, but 55 litres won't fit in its stated 53 x 29 x 29.5 cm. The Lino M claims 50 litres in 53 x 24 x 29 cm, and its title gives a different size again (18 x 36 x 65). Both state 2 years, and Lavie's main store doesn't list the Lino.
  • M MEDLER Tribe, Oxter and EpochNone of the three listings states a warranty. The Tribe and Oxter claim 65 litres in 52 x 30 x 32 cm (the Tribe's details field says 52 x 32 x 32), which doesn't fit, and the Tribe's own listing gives 1750 grams in its bullets but 900 g in its details, and polyester in one place but nylon in another.
  • Harissons Holdall 97L (HB1129BLACK)It holds far more (97 litres, 82 x 27 x 44 cm), weighs 1 kg 210 g and folds flat, but neither the listing nor Harissons' page mentions a telescopic handle; the listing describes grab handles and a pull strap. The listing states 1 year, while Harissons' page says up to 48 months including extended warranty, with registration within 15 days of delivery.

Before you buy

  1. Check the litres against the outer size

Multiply the outer length, width and height in centimetres and divide by a thousand: a soft bag can't hold more litres than that. Of the 20 shortlisted listings, 7 claim more, including the Lavie Lino 53 cm, the M MEDLER Oxter and the Safari Buzz 63. The Aristocrat Rookie 63 cm gives two outer sizes, and its 53 litres fits only the larger one. When the figures clash, one of them is wrong.

  2. Stick to the colour you compared

Weights and sizes can change between colour listings of the same bag. Two Lavie Lino 63 cm listings with the same size give 1 kg in teal and 1 kg 500 g in black, and the maroon uppercase Grid listing shows a size and weight that match neither the teal listing nor uppercase's page.

  3. Measure for the cabin yourself

Five Safari listings carry the same line about meeting airline carry-on dimensions, including the Buzz 63, whose own size field says "Checkin | 63 cm | Medium". No airline is named. Check your airline's size limit against the outer dimensions.

  4. Read the warranty conditions, not just the term

Safari wants a warranty card stamped by an authorised dealer plus the invoice. Both Safari's and uppercase's policies name the first buyer or gift recipient as the warranty holder, and uppercase repairs only at its own service centres. Both exclude transit damage, uppercase outright and Safari where it comes from mishandling. Harissons asks you to register within 15 days of delivery. Safari also leaves the cost of shipping a faulty bag to it with you. uppercase says only that it may cover the costs of repair or replacement and return of the product.
